An end in sight for ongoing VMware licences and SaaS services

As announced on December 11, 2023, VMware has reached another milestone in its already two-year journey to simplify its portfolio and use a subscription based model instead of ongoing licences.

This simplification means that VMware's 168 products will be offered in two different packages: VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). In addition, they will offer optional advanced add-ons that can be used in combination with these solutions. For small deployments, vSphere Standard and vSphere Essentials Plus continue to be offered as well.

Below is a summary of the changes made to the portfolio:

  • VMware vSphere Foundation: dthe data centre optimisation solution for traditional vSphere environments. It includes Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, as well as Aria Operations and Aria Operations for Logs as part of the standard features. Customers with more lightweight requirements, such as basic hardware consolidation or virtualisation on a very small number of servers, can still buy subscriptions to vSphere Standard and vSphere Essentials Plus Kit.
  • VMware Cloud Foundation: the new solution for customers looking to leverage the value of a full-stack infrastructure with a platform offering vSphere, vSAN and NSX, including the full Aria management and orchestration suite with new services.
  • VMware add-on services: available for both VMware vSphere Foundation and VMware Cloud Foundation to further enrich the customer journey and tackle additional storage, security, disaster recovery, Generative AI and other specific use cases.

This simplification of the portfolio enables customers to get more value out of their VMware investment and allows VMware to quicken the delivery of new innovations and simplify both deployment and management for customers.

Additionally, VMware by Broadcom also plans to offer ‘Bring Your Own License’, which allows customers to purchase VMware Cloud Foundation subscriptions from Broadcom and flexibly deploy to VMware-validated hybrid Cloud endpoints, as well as their own on-premises data centres. One more result of the transition is that the products listed in the table below have now reached their End of Availability (EoA) as standalone offerings.

Some offerings may still be available for use as part of VMware Cloud Foundation or VMware vSphere Foundation offerings. Like VMware wrote in this blog article, they are also announcing the EoA of the Aria SaaS services, but will continue to support customers currently using these services until the end of their subscription term. After this term, customers should switch to VCF or VVF. Please also note that Aria SaaS services are currently in maintenance mode, meaning that no new features will be published (security and essential updates will, however, be implemented during the subscription term).

This announcement covers all licensing options, including Perpetual, Support & Subscription (SnS), SaaS/hosted and other subscription types. It also covers each edition, suite and pricing structure for each product. Any exceptions to this coverage are specified separately.

If you are an existing customer who has purchased the EoA products listed above, but are not yet due for renewal, no immediate action is required at this time. VMware will continue to provide active support for the duration of your support contract. In addition, VMware licences are now only offered through suppliers invited to the Broadcom Advantage Partner Program, like Fundaments. In case you don't receive an invitation for the programme yourself, no problem. At Fundaments we offer the option to purchase the licences through us, so you can continue as usual. You will receive the licences, 1st and 2nd line support and the invoice from Fundaments. Should there really be any issues with your VMware environment, Broadcom will still be there to help you. Want to know more about this? Then contact us right away! Call 088 4227228 or email vmware@fundaments.nl.
