A sunny day filled with interesting sessions, a lot of news from VMware, a Cohesity party (our backup solution) and of course something you can't miss when you're in Barcelona: a Champions League match played by FC Barcelona! Harm Jan Stam, IT Manager at Fundaments, would like to tell you how his day was and update you on the latest news.

Harm Jan: “It was another busy day with all kinds of inspiring sessions! The day started at 09:00 with a 1.5 hour Keynote by VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger. VMware is going to be fully committed to Multi Cloud in the near future and has also announced to start linking in vCloud Director, our IaaS platform, to hyperscalers such as AWS and Azure. That means, as a customer, you can have the best of both worlds; the smart innovative services of the hyperscalers and the traditional Virtual Machines on our IaaS platform.

Project Pacific: defining Kubernetes performance

Another topic discussed was my personal favorite: “Project Pacific. This project is going to make containers and traditional VMs run side by side at the virtualization level, rather than a container within a VM. This is going to provide decisive Kubernetes performance. VMware's figures indicate that it is 30% faster than traditional Linux VMs and even 8x faster than bare-metal Linux machines. In addition, VMware has announced to provide Intrusion Detection and Intrution Prevention with their software-defined networking solution NSX. You then no longer need another, usually physical, solution for this, such as Fortinet, for example. After the Keynote, I followed a number of sessions, with the common thread for me still being Kubernetes. I saw a lot of Kubernetes deployments, CI pipelines, service mesh and various best practices on how to Kubernetes-proof a monolithic application.

I also learned how to monitor our IaaS platforms even better, with new VMware APIs and how DRS 2.0 is going to make the stability and high availability of our platforms even better for our customers' workloads. My day ended with a smashing party by Cohesity, with on stage none other than Rick Parfitt Jr. All in all, it was another successful day!”

Champions League with CSN Group

Raoul Werger, Managing Director at Fundaments, in the meantime attended the Champions League match FC Barcelona - Slavia Prague with our partner CSN Group. Raoul: “Unfortunately it was a somewhat boring match, with a 0 - 0 final score, but that didn't spoil the fun. Of course it is always a great experience to be at the Camp Nou and it was a great evening. CSN Group, thank you!”
