How to stay future-proof as an IT manager?

In our vision for the ‘organisation of the future’, one thing stands out: change. In fact, it can be said that change is the common thread in IT. Where Cloud was a concept a few years ago, it is now a standard part of ITi n practically every organisation. As an IT manager, how do you ensure that IT developments are well-known and applied appropriately? In this whitepaper, Larik-Jan Verschuren, CTO at Fundaments, shares his experiences in following trends and translating them for Fundaments. How does he as Technical Director ensure that he, and thus Fundaments, stays up-to-date? We then turn these experiences into reality by looking at current developments: what trends does he see? And what does this involve?

1. HOW TO STAY UP-TO-DATE AS AN IT MANAGER?

We asked our CTO Larik-Jan this question. The digital world is obviously developing at lightning speed, but how does he follow the important trends to stay up-to-date?

The customer as a fundament

‍A good IT manager goes along with this constantly changing world and tests trends based on a number of sources, namely: customers, technology and the market. One of the most important sources of information for me personally are our customers. I like to engage with them, aiming to find out where their challenges lie, what they are up against and where we can help them. This can be both at operational level and at strategic level.

Technology: Office of the CTO

Besides getting a lot of information from customer contacts, I naturally have a technical heart and like to test and try out as many new tools as possible for myself. One of the places we do this is in our Office of the CTO. This is basically our technical playground. We don't just take anything from a supplier, but remain critical and always test a solution extensively before putting it into use. We are and remain a group of stubborn technical experts, so technically everything must always work perfectly. We must be able to rely on a solution and it must be able to function in the landscape in which we operate: being able to use it frequently and repeatedly for multiple partners is key in this matter.
