WHAT EXACTLY IS INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE?
For a long time, the business models of hosting and data centre services were based on owning, renting or leasing hardware and software. Expanding computing capacity or storage required buying and adding hardware or software. A process that took time, was capital-intensive as a rule and lacked flexibility. This situation has been made outdated by two developments. The first is virtualisation, which is the process of creating a layer between hardware and the operating system using software from VMware, for example. Through this layer, so-called virtual machines can be created. As a result, the hardware is used more efficiently without losing stability¹. Virtualisation leads to lower management costs from which the customer benefits.
