Press release: Fundaments is the first in the Netherlands to achieve the VMware Sovereign Cloud status

Fundaments, Expert in Clouds, is the first in the Netherlands to achieve the VMware Sovereign Cloud status. Fundaments' customers, including government institutions, IT service providers and software developers, can therefore be sure that their data is 100% controlled, managed and monitored by Fundaments, that it is located on Dutch soil and that it complies with Dutch laws and regulations regarding privacy and data storage.

Working together from a proven secure and compliant Cloud foundation

Achieving this status is an important achievement of Fundaments, which has been providing its Cloud services since its foundation in 2000 from only Dutch, geographically separated, data centers. Larik-Jan Verschuren, CTO of Fundaments: “Achieving the status is not only an important milestone for us, but also for our customers who rely on Fundaments' Cloud solutions for their services and/or business-critical processes. More and more companies and institutions not only want to be 100% secure and compliant, but also want and need to be able to demonstrate this. Especially in view of the increasingly strict laws and regulations in the field of data security and privacy and the increasing threat of, for example, cyber attacks. Because we, as a supplier of their Cloud infrastructure, have the VMware Sovereign Cloud status, their Cloud infrastructure is automatically provided with this status.

Sovereign Cloud status as a trademark

The Sovereign Cloud status was created by VMware to separate the wheat from the chaff in Cloud provider country. Under the VMware Sovereign Cloud Initiative, VMware is building a collection of global cloud providers that deliver VMware Cloud Verified services using an architecture built on VMware Validated Designs. To qualify, Cloud providers must demonstrate compliance with a framework of principles, best practices, and technical architecture requirements to deliver Cloud services that meet the data sovereignty requirements of the jurisdiction in which the Cloud operates.

Henry Godwin, VMware's Director of EMEA North (Benelux, Nordics, Baltics, UK, Ireland) for Cloud providers: “Our Sovereign Cloud initiative is aimed at partners who deliver not only data center infrastructure, but also a certified sovereign Cloud experience. Then you as an organization know 100 percent for sure that you are going to work with a party that only stores your data where it is allowed according to the relevant regulations – for example the GDPR. We are only at the beginning and need to put into practice how this initiative will work for our customers. Given the strict certification that Fundaments now complies with - I have no doubts that we will achieve good results.” According to Godwin, the fact that Fundaments has now achieved this status as the first in the Netherlands means that they are a top partner for VMware in this regard.
