After a security incident has occurred, been identified and acted upon, your Cloud environment may have been damaged or compromised. Should you want to return to a secure situation, it is important to be prepared for this and therefore measures must already have been taken. We call this ‘recover’. It is crucial here that you have secured your data from the Cloud environment and are prepared to return to a situation prior to the security incident.
An introduction to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework has been provided in an earlier article. You can read that back here.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD DISASTER RECOVERY PLAN
It is very important to have a good Disaster Recovery plan. Regardless of the business you operate in, something can always happen that brings the day-to-day operation to a halt. Your organisation would then be required to recover from this as quickly as possible and continue delivering services to your customers. From data breaches to ransomware to natural disasters, you need to have a plan and be prepared for each scenario. Should you not have one, you could expose your customers and organisation to huge financial costs, reputational damage and more. So doing nothing is not an option. Just consider how much money it will cost, should your business be unable to operate for an hour.
We see that while many organisations recognise the importance of Disaster Recovery, they struggle to get started with it. It is often thought that as long as they have not been affected, or haven't experienced downtime, they are immune to such events. However, it is better to be prepared and incur costs in the process, than to incur costs afterwards.
FUNDAMENTS DRAAS AND BAAS
Fundaments offers two solutions to restore a Cloud environment to its normal state; BAAS (Back-up as a Service) & DRAAS (Disaster Recovery as a Service).
BAAS
In short, a backup is nothing more than a copy of your data (or your customers' data) in another location. For example, on another computer or in the Cloud. Thanks to a backup, data is protected in case of, for example, accidental deletion of files, theft or technical problems (think of a hard drive crashing). Thanks to a backup, there is always data to fall back on. Basically, the more secure the better. With Backup as a Service from Fundaments, you prevent the loss of business-critical data, ensuring the continuity of your organisation. We use the innovative technologies of SolarWinds, Cohesity and Veeam. These suppliers ensure that your data is available at all times. In doing so, we, or you, take full control of your backup and restore process.
DRAAS
Proper backup at another location is only the first step in business continuity. Step two is having the right recovery systems in place. That means having the right servers, storage, and operational systems to use for data recovery. The recovery environment should mirror the production environment, in a way. At Fundaments, we have Disaster Recovery as a Service services for this, and our Cloud Experts ensure that your organisation never has to stand still in the event of a disaster.
Disaster Recovery is somewhat similar to a backup, but goes a step further than that. With Disaster Recovery, a copy is made not just of a few folders, but of an entire environment. The recovery environment is mirrored to the production environment. This allows faster switching from one environment to another, without having to set up a new environment and copy all files from one location to another. For this, we use VMware's vCloud Availability, among others.
